Amsterdam holds the title of the city with the most nationalities in terms of inhabitants and is a city that attracts tourists from all corners of the globe regardless of their interests.

A trip to Amsterdam, the city with countless canals and over 1000 bridges, is a travel experience. Today we will discover even more about what makes Amsterdam unique through our many trips there!

What makes Amsterdam unique

Amsterdam is a city that is easily discovered on foot or even by bike which is the favourite mode of transport for the inhabitants of the capital of the Netherlands. Walk along the countless canals, admire the triangular-roofed houses, some of which date back to the 1200s, shop in the flea markets, relax in the green parks, sip traditional drinks in the atmospheric cafes and of course visit the famous museums of Europe’s coolest city. Amsterdam has been called the city with the most museums in the world in proportion, as it has more than 80 museums.

One of the most famous is the Van Gogh Museum which houses most of the works of the great Dutch artist, as well as other painters. In the Nieuwmarkt district, there is Museum Het Rembrandthuis, the house in which Rembrand lived from 1639 to 1658 and now houses an impressive collection of prints by the famous painter.

The Anne Frank Huis Museum is the house in which, for two years, the Frank family hid and where little Anne Frank wrote her famous diary which is also on display in this museum. In the Jordaan area and at the Tulip Museum you will be impressed by the colourfulness of this amazing flower for which the Netherlands is famous for its cultivation. Finally, a visit to the Sex Museum will confirm that you are in the most liberal city in Europe.

If you’re tired of museums and looking for a little luxury or opulence, head to the city’s main square, Dam Square. There you will find the Royal Palace which is the residence of King William-Alexander, as the country’s constitution is a Royal Parliamentary Republic. The palace is often open to visitors since the royal family most often resides in The Hague. If you are in Amsterdam on 27 April, you will have the opportunity to join a special “orange” party in Damm Square, as this is when King’s Day is celebrated. This square is also home to Madame Tussaud’s wax museum and the imposing National Memorial to the victims of the Second World War.

But beyond the historical attractions, Amsterdam is also extremely popular for its entertainment. Beyond the coffee shops and the Red Light District, you’ll find many excellent restaurants, bars with a strong urban aesthetic, and in the city’s countless clubs, the Dutch party every night like it’s their last night out.
